PNC Gallery Seoul is pleased to present Hoon Kwak 1972–1989: From Soil to Soil, a solo exhibition focusing on the formative years of Hoon Kwak, a pioneering first-generation Korean diaspora artist. The exhibition will run from May 2 to June 28, 2025, and offers a comprehensive archival survey of Kwak’s early works from the 1970s through 1989—a period during which his distinctive visual language began to emerge and evolve.

Known for his exploration of the intersection between Eastern philosophy and contemporary art, Kwak has continuously experimented with traditional materials and avant-garde media. This exhibition highlights key paintings, drawings, and archival materials created around the time of his relocation to the United States. It traces the artist’s early trajectory as he sought to bridge traditional modes of thought with contemporary aesthetic inquiries.

Featuring rarely seen archival works from the 1970s, along with large-scale paintings from the 1980s, the exhibition offers an in-depth view into the evolution of Kwak’s formal vocabulary across five decades, revealing the foundational ethos of his artistic practice.

피앤씨갤러리 서울은 오는 5월 2일부터 2025년 6월 28일까지 한국 1세대 디아스포라 작가 곽훈의 초기작을 집중 조명하는 개인전 <곽훈 1972–1989 : From Soil to Soil>를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 곽훈 작가의 예술 세계가 본격적으로 형성되기 시작한 1970년대부터 1989년까지의 작업을 중심으로 그의 조형 언어가 형성되고 전개되어 온 과정으로 구성된 아카이브 전시로, 그의 예술 세계의 원형을 집중적으로 보여주는 전시이다. 곽훈은 전통적인 재료와 실험적 매체를 넘나들며 동양적 사유와 현대미술 사이의 접점을 모색해 온 작가이다. 이번 전시는 로스앤젤레스 이주 전후의 시기에 제작된 회화 작업, 드로잉, 자료 문헌 등 주요 아카이브를 통해, 전통적 재료와 매체 실험이 교차하는 지점에서 동양적 사유와 현대미술의 접점을 탐구한 그의 초창기 궤적을 집중적으로 보여준다. 작가의 1970년대 초기작부터 기존에 선보이지 않았던 미공개 아카이브 작품들과, 1980년대 대형 회화 작품까지 작가의 조형 언어가 형성되고 발전해 가는 50여년 간의 작품 세계를 총체적으로 조망할 수 있다.
